Perfectly Imperfect

Check out our other blog posts to learn more about why we are #TeamSoy and use only non-toxic ingredients.

Just like people, our non-toxic, all-natural soy wax candles are perfectly imperfect.

The real deal, baby

Some of the perceived “imperfections” described below can be minimized by “enhancing” the wax with additives and dyes (many of which are animal-derived or contain ingredients which may be toxic when burned). Fig & Fire candles do NOT contain any of these.

We have an appreciation for the beauty and natural characteristics of soy and don’t think it needs to be modified, especially when these “imperfections” (if they even occur at all) are purely aesthetic and in NO WAY impact the quality of the candle, how it burns, or the fragrance.

So, what kind of aesthetic “imperfections” are we talking about?

Frosting

A crystal formation may form on the surface of candles made with 100% soy wax. This is also known as candle frosting and is a natural characteristic of all-natural wax. When I first started making candles, this drove the perfectionist in me nuts. You know all the little things you dislike about yourself, but that everyone else either doesn't even notice or absolutely loves? Helloooo, frosting!

Tin discoloration

Certain oils at higher concentrations can cause the color of the silver tin candles to shift. This is a natural reaction that sometimes occurs in response to the oil in the wax interacting with the container in a way that causes a slight orange/brown tint over time (don't worry, it's not as bad as the time Ross got a tan). If you're wondering why we don't offer tins in all our scents, this is why!

Wax color tint

Certain oils have a tint to them, which can cause the wax in the candle to appear a slightly different shade than creamy white. You know how wedding dresses can be white, ivory, cream, almond, and about a million other barely noticeable different shades of white? It's the same thing with candles. Most people probably wouldn’t even notice, but my attention to detail is off the charts!

Textured tops

After burning a candle, you may notice the top surface isn’t perfectly smooth. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the candle! A textured top is caused by the candle cooling unevenly and, honestly, we think it gives the candle character.

Bask in the beauty

Being able to reframe our thoughts is so powerful, and we could all benefit from being a little kinder to ourselves and things that are viewed as "different." When we let go of what we think is ideal, we can find beauty in everything.

xoxo,
Karen
